When the Glen Lennox apartments and shopping center opened in south-eastern Chapel Hill, they were, along with other suburban areas outside the city limits, without a dedicated and local fire department that could respond to fires quickly. Starting in 1950 Glen Lennox had the beginnings of a volunteer fire company (see legeros.com/blog/glen-lennox-fire-department-in-chapel-hill for information on the subject), that was used as a stop-gap measure until an "official" fire station could be built.
In mid-1957, preliminary plans for a new fire station were prepared by architect Archie R. Davis, with the final site/property yet to be determined. The building was to be one-story with “colonial brick architecture," and be about 3,300 square feet. In addition to the fire truck garage, it was to include a classroom, lounge, dormitory, kitchen, furnace room, back porch, and upstairs storage area. In November 1957, plans were finalized on the new fire station.
In May 1958, the purchase of the fire station site was authorized by the town board, and the property was purchased in December 1958. Construction of the building began circa February 1959, and was opened November 16, with the official/public opening/dedication November 17.

In 1976, the Chapel Hill Police Department moved into Station 2, sharing space with the fire department, with the sleeping quarters being converted to training and office spaces for the use of both the CHFD and CHPD. In early 1981, the CHPD vacated their space at Station 2 and move into their new headquarters on Airport Road.
In 1999, the building was renovated, with the living area, kitchen, and day room modified; drop ceilings were also added throughout and new windows were installed.
In January 2017, Station 2 closed, and its fire engine (Engine 32) was temporarily relocated to a structure at 204 Finley Golf Course Road. Later in January, demolition of the fire station began.
