Built in 1927 for UNC/Chapel Hill's telephone exchange (replacing an earlier building to the south west on Henderson Street), it was expanded in 1958. Both the construction and the expansion were due to the need for more modern switching equipment as telephone ownership and usage grew in Chapel Hill.

In 1925, UNC purchased the Chapel Hill Telephone Company. In 1977, the system was sold to Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph.
