The Caldwell Institute was incorporated in 1899, but had been a school since the 1870s. The "Caldwell Institute" post office operated from 1877 to 1904.[1]

In 1877 the school's committee members were William McKee, R. N. Hall, Jr., and Carroll Walters.[2]

Its trustees at that time of incorporation were K. N. Hall, Jr., D. S. Miller, Dr. A. C. Jordan, Rev. J. H. McCracken, W. D. Villiner, W. J. Miller, J. D. Nichols, T. H. Wilson, T. J. Hall, J. T. Wilson, Weldon Hall, C. E. Wilson, J. T. Wilkerson, J. C. Rountree, T. J. Riley, R. N. Hall, Sr., J. R. Wilson, W. D. Woods, D. S. Allison, W. R. McKee, and Thomas T. Candler.[3]
