The Caldwell Institute was incorporated in 1899, but had been a school since circa 1875. The "Caldwell Institute" post office operated from 1877 to 1904.[1]

Its trustees at the time of incorporation were K. N. Hall, Jr., D. S. Miller, Dr. A. C. Jordan, Rev. J. H. McCracken, W. D. Villiner, W. J. Miller, J. D. Nichols, T. H. Wilson, T. J. Hall, J. T. Wilson, Weldon Hall, C. E. Wilson, J. T. Wilkerson, J. C. Rountree, T. J. Riley, R. N. Hall, Sr., J. R. Wilson, W. D. Woods, D. S. Allison, W. R. McKee, and Thomas T. Candler.[2]

The property was split up, with the building and grounds being sold to the Orange County Board of Education in 1919, to be used as a public school. Prior to that, the building may have been for a time used as the manse for the nearby Little River Presbyterian Church. [3] The public road (now HWY 57) was realigned sometime between 1938 and 1955. The building was used as a residence for awhile. The structure is still extant, along with an outbuilding and well, but all are in poor condition.

The 1918 soil map of Orange County mislabels the school as the "Bingham School." A building at its location does appear on the 1938 and 1955 USDA aerial photos.
