The Cedar Grove Academy building was built in late 1845, replacing a smaller school structure. Samuel W. Hughes founded the school. Benjamin C. Patton operated the school after Hughes left to open his own school in the late 1850s. Hughes' daughter, Annie L. Hughes, operated the school from 1901 to 1914 (and lived in the upstairs of the structure). Orange County bought the school in 1914; it closed in 1915.

From the NRHP Cedar Grove Rural Crossroads Historic District (OR1424) form:

"...the school building was a two-story, frame, triple-A structure with a full-facade hipped porch with a spindlework cornice. The four-over-four windows were set in segmentally arched openings. The double-leafed central entrance set within a projecting central bay. A four-sided pedimented cupola crowned the roof."
