Dr. Archibald C. Jordan and his brother, Thomas M. Jordan, operated this business (listed as "T. M. Jordan & Co." in 1896) beginning circa 1875 (according to a newspaper article, the business moved to a new space in 1896 -- it might be this building). According to a NRHP report, this "store/pharmacy enabled community members and [Caldwell Academy] students to get their prescriptions filled without making the seven-mile trip to Hillsborough. Such crossroads stores were vital institutions in rural Orange County, providing loans and credit to neighborhood farmers in tough economic times, and needed manufactured goods in more affluent ones," and that "the Jordan Brothers' Store was a gathering place for Academy students, locals, and travelers, and that traveling salesmen would often spend the night in Dr. Jordan's guest room" in his house across the road.[1]

The 1880 census lists Thomas as a farmer; the 1900 census lists him as a merchant. Circa 1905, Dr. Arch Jordan moved to Durham, and Thomas also moved to Durham, sometime between circa 1905 and his death in 1917.

The public road (now HWY 57) was realigned sometime between 1938 and 1955. This building may have been used as a residence or outbuilding for awhile. The structure is still extant, but is in poor condition.
