The ScuttlebuttĀ building was built in 1943 as a canteen for U.S. Navy cadets on campus while attending pre-flight school during World War II. It opened for business January 11, 1944, for use only by U. S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel. However, claiming slumping sales, it opened for civilians as well in September 1944.
It was given to UNC in 1945, and was later operated by Student Stores.
By the early 1970s the manager said the building was "about to fall down" and the University considered demolishing it as it would cost too much to repair. The Scuttlebutt building was torn down in October 1996 after being closed since May 1995.
