The Boone Trail Highway is a product of Joseph Hampton Rich - from Mocksville, NC - who wanted to keep the memory of Daniel Boone's travels in the automobile age. From 1913 to 1938, he erected 358 metal tablets from Virginia Beach to San Francisco.
Many of the Boone Trail Highway markers shows an image in relief of Daniel Boone and his hunting dog, taken from an 1861 illustration by Alonzo Chapel.
This marker was emplaced sometime between 1918 and 1926, and is attached to the front of a block of granite. It was re-dedicated March 4, 1938 after Franklin Street was widened and the marker moved.
At some point in the late 20th century, it was found out that Daniel Boone did not travel on this roadway. The plaque was removed and its current location is unknown.
