From a postcard, circa 1910. (NC Postcard Collection)

Circa 1900 (History of the Town of Hillsborough, 1754-1966, p. 21)

March 1888 Sanborn Map excerpt

From the January 3, 1885 Orange County Observer

From the September 3, 1896 Orange County Observer

The water source was likely designated as for public use during the colonial and antebellum periods, and may have been associated with the circa 1758-1826 "Market House." The 1888 Sanborn map shows the pump, but no later Sanborn maps do; however, in later newspaper accounts (as late as March 1905 that I can find) the "town pump" is mentioned as money being alloted to its upkeep and/or as a reference point for businesses.
