Built between 1901 and 1902. It held between 80,000 and 90,000 gallons of water and was 80 feet tall. It was financed by the 1901 State legislature and with university funds. Its interior was painted with graphite to fight corrosion.

After a new 200,000 gallon water tank/standpipe was erected "west of the Pittsboro Road" in May 1925, this standpipe was used as a boiler feed reservoir by UNC's school of engineering.

It was dismantled sometime between 1931 and 1934.
