Samuel Jackson Brockwell was born in Orange County (near Chapel Hill) in 1870 to Andrew Jackson Brockwell (a farmer) and Elizabeth (Mason) Brockwell.
Brockwell was a local enterpreneur, property developer, served on various committeees, but was mainly a businessman; one of his early businesses in Chapel Hill was owning and operating the town's first movie theater.
He married Pernean "Fannie" Frances Sugg December 2, 1903. The Brockwells had a son, Gerald Sugg Brockwell, but he only lived for five days, from September 7th to 12th, 1904.
Brockwell died of tuberculosis and pneumonia in 1940 and is buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
